The Delhi government has announced a
sweeping new education initiative to integrate artificial intelligence into the
school curriculum, marking one of the capital’s most ambitious technological
learning reforms to date.
Under the programme — titled Delhi
AI Grind — students from Class 6 onwards will undergo structured AI
learning, with participation made mandatory for Classes 6 to 9 and Class 11.
According to guidelines issued by
the Directorate of Education (DoE), the initiative targets learners aged 10
to 25 years, spanning school, university and technical education groups.
The programme will be implemented across all education districts from December
to March.
In an official circular dated
December 3, the DoE described the initiative as a key pillar of the New Era
of Entrepreneurial Ecosystem and Vision (NEEEV) — a framework aimed at
preparing young learners for future industry shifts. “The initiative aims to
increase artificial intelligence (AI)-related awareness and train students to
solve real-world problems using AI,” the circular reads.
The programme will be conducted
collaboratively by the Department of Education and the Department of Higher and
Technical Education, alongside the ViSV Foundation. School Innovation Councils
and specially appointed NEEEV teachers will serve as mentors throughout the
initiative.
Delhi AI Grind will unfold in
multiple phases, including orientation, school-level Mini Grinds,
district evaluations and a final city-level showcase. KS Upadhyay, Additional
Director of Education, has been designated as the nodal officer overseeing
school-level execution.
A detailed roll-out schedule has
been issued, requiring schools to register on the AI Grind portal and
nominate five campus ambassadors by December 8. Internal evaluations will
begin after school-level activities from December 15, leading to district and
state-level selections.
As part of the curriculum, students
will explore applications of AI in key civic and developmental areas —
including smart mobility, climate change, sustainable energy, public safety,
healthcare, education, and civic governance.
The programme’s structure is divided
into three innovation tiers:
The government hopes the programme will not only build future-ready digital literacy in students, but also position Delhi as a leading hub for youth innovation in AI-driven fields.
